The Verandah in the forest, Matheran
Anew path in the forest clears up in Matheran, the last British hill station perched atop the Sahyadri ranges. Chug up in a toy train or walk, trot, dandi off the palanquins past the gigantic mansions built by the British, the Parsis and the Bohras. For Matheran is Asia's only pedestrian hill resort. Lounge like never before in a verandah of your dreams. Read under the highest domestic cieling you would have known (12 metres). Stroll down to Charlotte Lake. Relish the local cuisines. Find a space for your mind. Or lose yourself to find yourself anew. Built in 1852 it was the second house built in Matheran, the entrance is deliberately muted. No ostentanious gate intimidates the traveller, no excessively ornamented reception. You enter as a guest at a family house... the specialness of this latest property is that, bar the discreet presentation of the bill, you can't really tell where a family gateway ends and a hotel begins...
